How it works
Four steps, and we do the paperwork.
- Tell us about the car and the spot. What you drive, where the charger would go, and how far it is from the switchboard.
- We check the supply. Your switchboard, your existing load and whether you’re single or three-phase, this is what decides the charger.
- Approval and quote. Anything over 20A single phase needs SA Power Networks approval. We lodge it, and the quote covers the charger, the circuit and any board work.
- Installed, tested and closed out. Charger mounted, circuit run and tested, certificate of compliance issued and the approval closed out with SA Power Networks.
Charging off solar, and what it's actually worth
The gap is bigger than people expect. Charging from the grid costs whatever you pay per kilowatt hour. Charging from spare solar costs you only the feed-in tariff you gave up — usually a few cents. Over a year of ordinary driving that difference adds up to real money.
The charger has to be able to do it. Not every charger can follow your solar. The smart ones watch what the house is exporting and lift or drop the charge rate to match, so the car soaks up the surplus instead of sending it to the grid for next to nothing. If that’s what you’re after, tell us up front — it changes which charger we’d recommend.
It’s also a switchboard conversation. A charger is one of the biggest single loads you can add to a house. Older boards sometimes can’t take it without work, and there are supply limits on what can be installed. We check all of that before quoting rather than discovering it on the day.
Chargers above 20A single phase, or 25A per phase on three-phase, need approval from SA Power Networks before installation. We lodge the application and close it out after the job. Electrical work comes with a certificate of compliance.

Can't I just use the cable that came with the car?
You can, and for a short commute it’s sometimes enough. But those cables draw from an ordinary power point at about 2kW, so you’re looking at overnight and then some for a decent top-up. A proper wall charger is several times faster and, unlike a lead running to a power point, it’s on its own circuit designed for the job.
How fast will it charge?
A typical home charger on single phase runs at about 7kW, which for most EVs is somewhere around 40km of range for every hour it’s plugged in so an empty battery is full overnight and a normal day’s driving is replaced in an hour or two. Three-phase can go faster again, but only if the property has three-phase supply.
Do I need three-phase power?
No. Most homes are single phase and a 7kW charger suits them fine. Three-phase opens up faster charging, and matters more for businesses or households charging two cars, but it’s not something worth converting to just for a charger.
Can it charge from my solar?
With the right charger, yes. It watches what your system is exporting and matches the charge rate to the surplus, so the car runs on your own power instead of the grid. Tell us that’s what you want before we quote, because it narrows down which charger we’d put in.
Is there a rebate for EV chargers in South Australia?
Not at the moment. The home charger rebate that was proposed was cancelled, and the state EV purchase rebate finished at the end of 2024. South Australia has put its funding into public charging instead. If that changes we’ll say so, we’re not going to quote you on a rebate that doesn’t exist.
Does the power company need to know?
For anything above 20A single phase, yes it needs approval from SA Power Networks before it goes in, and the application has to be closed out afterwards. We handle both. A charger that plugs into an ordinary power point doesn’t need approval.
Will my switchboard cope?
Often yes, sometimes no. A charger is a big continuous load, and older boards can be short on space, short on protection or already close to their limit. We look at the board as part of the quote and include any work that’s needed, so it isn’t a surprise on install day.
